Worldwide Sales of Smartphones Returned to Growth in First Quarter of 2018

Global sales of smartphones to end users returned to growth in the first quarter of 2018 with a 1.3 percent increase over the same period in 2017, according to Gartner, Inc. Compared to the first quarter of 2017 sales of total mobile phones stalled and reached 455 million units in the first quarter of 2018.
Nearly 384 million smartphones were sold in the first quarter of 2018, representing 84 percent of total mobile phones sold (see Table 1). "Demand for premium and high-end smartphones continued to suffer due to marginal incremental benefits during upgrade," said Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner. "Demand for entry-level smartphones (sub-$100) and low midtier smartphones (sub-$150) improved due to better-quality models."
Continued weakness in Greater China's mobile phone market also limited growth potential for the top global brands, including Chinese brands such as OPPO and Vivo, with over 70 percent of their sales coming from Greater China.

Employee retention and improving quality of work key areas of focus for organisations in India

Half (50%) of companies across India are expecting their workforce to grow by an incredible 6% or more this year, according to the inaugural India Employment Screening Benchmark Report from HireRight, a leading provider of global background checks.
The India spotlight is based on HireRight’s annual Employment Screening Benchmark Report, the largest, most comprehensive survey of its kind in the industry. Nearly 6,000 human resource professionals were surveyed globally this year.
It revealed that overall, an incredible 85% of organisations in India were looking to bolster their teams with increased hiring – a sentiment considerably more bullish than the wider APAC region, at 77%. Interestingly, the survey also revealed a significant decrease in organisational dependency on contingent workers compared to last year’s findings – almost half (43%) of companies had less than 10% of their workforce made up of non-employees. This suggests that planned recruitment drives in 2018 may focus on pe…

Building Better Data Protection and Steering Clear of GDPR Violations

By: Nilesh Jain, Vice President – South East Asia and India, Trend Micro

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), adopted in April 2016 after four years of deliberations, is now in force. The regulation made headlines around the globe with its stricter data protection standards, substantial fines, and most of all, extensive reach. The GDPR affects any organization that holds an EU citizen’s personal data, no matter the size or location. A company based in Asia is as accountable as a multinational enterprise with offices across Europe — as long as it collects and processes the data of EU citizens.

The regulation also delineated the data protection obligations of affected organizations — from adopting state-of-the-art security methods to providing people more access to and control of their data. Recognizing the sweeping changes required for compliance, the EU authorities granted member states and organizations two years to get ready and prepare. And today, the transition stage is …

Digital Consumers and ‘New-gen’ Technologies to Lead Virtual Healthcare into the future

By: Sanjay Pathak - Head Healthcare and Insurance Solutions, 3i Infotech
While ‘Telemedicine’ has been there for a while, it did not become mainstream the way it was expected mostly due to lack of right technology and business objectives. In the current context, virtual care would mean remote health monitoring, home health management, telemedicine, kiosk and self-diagnosis based systems, wearables and the likes. Ideally, a collaborative environment leverages video, audio, mobile/portals, sensors/kiosk from where consumers can receive care with no constraints of location, time & in-person touch. The current virtual care drive is fueled by digital consumers, technology advancements, high cost of care, regulation driven better care mandates, and sparse density of physicians to name a few.

Let’s explore some of these in the current context -
Technology advancements: IoT, AI/Voice and Blockchain could pave the way forward for the connected health/virtual care. These technologies hav…

It’s a marvel to construe that machines of today can actually learn, improve over a period of time with an in-built self learning capability.

AI not only refers to a specific software algorithm but a broad spectrum of capabilities of machines that have cognitive functions, which include speech recognition, machine translation, file reading from a machine, fraud detection prediction, learning and predicting trends and natural language processing.  A recent report suggests that globally over $1 trillion of today’s financial service…

By: Rabih Itani, Regional Business Development Manager - Security, Middle East and Turkey at Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company
