On Saturday, May 20, 156 trips started simultaneously at 7:29:06am GMT, putting us over the five billion mark.
These trips happened in 24 countries on six continents, in cities like Mumbai, Moscow and Medellin. One lucky driver was on his first trip: he picked up a passenger on a motorbike in Jakarta, Indonesia. And six riders were taking their first Uber trips, too. Out of the 156 simultaneous 5 billionth trip, India made the largest contribution outside of U.S. with 19 simultaneous 5 billionth trips. India emerged as the second-largest contributor to the global milestone, after the U.S. Driver partners across Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune simultaneously clocked the 5 billionth trip. Improved Cybersecurity a Must as Cashless Economy Rises Post-Demonetization: Kaspersky Lab

Image
As government and financial firms in India promote cashless transactions seven months after the revolutionary demonetization of the two major bills in the country, global cybersecurity company Kaspersky Lab urged for a major beefing up of online defences of consumers and banks against hackers.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in November last year the termination of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 banknotes of the Mahatma Gandhi series to eradicate the use of black money which reportedly funds terrorism and illegal activities in India.
The demonetization led to the increased numbers of paperless transactions in the country, which also opened more opportunities for money-hungry attackers.
“The long queues on ATM machines and the shortage in currency bills resulted to the rise of the more convenient use of digital payments and electronic wallets. While transacting money online is indeed easier compared to the traditional method, it is more dangerous too. It’s a well-known fact tha…

Defence against the wrath of Ransomware

Image
By: Govind Rammurthy, CEO of eScan

The recent attack by Petya ransomware is another warning to organizations about the possible catastrophe of vulnerabilities in their networks or IT infrastructure. Petya Ransomware is spreading fast with Ukraine being the worst hit country in last 24 hours. It uses the same exploit, which WannaCry had used to propagate itself and has created havoc in the recent past. The exploit has been provided with a patch by Microsoft way back in March 2017, but many organizations missed updating their OS and network.
Eternal Blue was the exploit which was used by WannaCry and it uses the SMB protocol vulnerability to propagate throughout the network. However, Petya Ransomware not just encrypts the files but after encrypting them, tries to encrypt the MBR too, effectively rendering the infected systems un-bootable.
According to our findings, Petya was pushed through an update for MeDoc financial software used mostly by organizations in Ukraine and phishing emails…
