A new family of low-power microcontrollers (MCUs) for driving Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) featuring Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) and intelligent analog is now available from Microchip Technology Inc., a leading provider of microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog and Flash-IP solutions. The nine member PIC16F19197 family includes a battery friendly LCD drive charge pump, 12-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter with computation (ADC2), a low-power comparator, and active clock tuning of its high frequency oscillator. Worldwide Sales of Smartphones Grew 9 Percent in First Quarter of 2017

Global sales of smartphones to end users totaled 380 million units in the first quarter of 2017, a 9.1 percent increase over the first quarter of 2016, according to Gartner, Inc. Mobile phone buyers are spending more to get a better phone, resulting in the rise in average selling prices of types of phone.
The shift in buyer preference is positively affecting Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei, Oppo and Vivo in their strategy to build desirable features at affordable prices. Their combined market share in the first quarter of 2017 accounted for 24 percent, up 7 percentage points year on year.
"The top three Chinese smartphone manufacturers are driving sales with their competitively priced, high quality smartphones equipped with innovative features," said Anshul Gupta, research director at Gartner. "Furthermore, aggressive marketing and sales promotion have further helped these brands to take share from other brands in markets such as India, Indonesia and Thailand.&quo…

Smartphones, medical devices to cost less with GST

In a bid to ensure that the benefits of lower GST on products such as smartphones and medical devices are handed over to the consumers, the government released on Monday calculations to show how the burden of indirect taxes will come down in the new regime.
The detailed analysis from the finance ministry comes days after the GST Council, comprising ministers from the Centre and states, decided on product-wise tax rates and the government threatened to invoke the anti-profiteering clause if the gains were not passed on from July, the scheduled date for GST launch. Some manufacturers, such as mobile phone and white goods companies, have suggested that prices may rise once GST kicks in although the government has repeatedly said that in most cases, not only is the burden lower but the advantage of input tax credit — or gains from refunds for taxes paid — will ensure that prices come down. In addition, several cesses and surcharges are going away.
